Pirates

The pirates theme was a huge success. Many people say that not since 1978 when the first themes were made did the company have a more exciting year. The sets were first promoted with commercials and a short comic book called the Golden Medallion. One of the largest differences was that the minifigures had other facial features besides two eyes and a nose. The theme also introduced guns into the LEGO world and the first LEGO minifigure bottom piece to have a different kind of leg, a peg leg. The first hand element to not be a yellow hand was in the pirates theme too, the hook hand. The theme consisted of two different enemies. Captain Redbeard's pirate crew that was always on the look out for treasures, and Governor Broadsides imperial armada that did their best to stop the pirates from stealing treasure. Perhaps the most well known sets in the LEGO pirates theme were these two sets: The 6285 Black seas Barracuda and the 6276 El Dorado Fortress. The black seas Barracuda was Captain Redbeard's personal flagship, while as El Dorado Fortress was the largest Imperial Fortress. The LEGO pirates theme was a huge step forward for the LEGO group and one of the largest themes in the LEGO world.
The El Dorado Fortress was the governors best stronghold.

The LEGO Black seas Barracuda is a favorite between fans.
