Modified Fortuna Class Landspeeder (MOC and Dark Times RPG)

The Dark Times RPG is holding a month long challenge which started on the 19th of October. The object of the challenge is to construct a speeder, each with different abilities and appearance depending on the player's faction. Imperial players had to construct a stylish, luxurious speeder for there character. Members of the Confederate Remnant had to build a speeder using parts of another ship or speeder, for example a landspeeder with S-foils from a X-wing. And lastly members of the Unaligned faction were challenged to construct any speeder they wanted, as long as it contained hidden weapons they could use for taking out other pilots. As I am a member of the Unaligned Faction, I constructed a speeder inspired by a M-68 landspeeder, however removed the arch and extended it to give it a classic 60s car look. I imagined it being the personal speeder of my character, the bounty hunter Marcus Bender, that he had stolen from a wealthy gambler in Canto Bight. To meet the hidden-weapons requirement I built in slide out blasters on the underside of the speeder. While building this model I challenged myself to make it as smooth as possible, to give it a stylish and fast look, which meant using the SNOT technique (Studs Not On Top). There are no studs on the MOC whatsoever, except on the lightsaber hilts towards the back of the vehicle. To make it even smoother, I tiled up the bottom of the speeder as well to have no anti-studs on the bottom of the model. Besides that I used a number of different techniques to achieve the luxurious look I was going for.

I believe this model came out very well and it was met with general approval - it is one of my only three MOC to get featured on the Brick Vault top ten MOCs of the week video, this time as an honorable mention. It is also my first MOC on Flickr to achieve +50 faves. The challenge was very interesting and enjoyable and I look forward to seeing what other participants cook up for the race.

Approximate build time: 5 hours

Number of pieces: about 500

Availability of the pieces: No especially rare pieces were used in this model, however many black curved slopes and tiles are needed - I believe I used over 40 1x2 black curved slopes to complete the underside of the MOC.

Favorite part of the build process: Either making it so that the bottom of the model was tiled up, or adding the curved backseat using an arch an 1x1 tiles in tan.

Level of difficulty: To make a model tiled on the bottom is a lot harder than it sounds, and the whole inside of the MOC is chock full of different techniques used to do that. In other words - very, very hard.

Below is a short description that went with this MOC for the RPG:

Marcus Bender's personal speeder he acquired during a trip to Canto Bight, built for the Dark Times RPG Boonta Speeder race challenge. The Fortuna class speeders were built for two purposes - to transport it's passengers to their destination as fast and as luxuriously as possible. With a few quick modifications by Bender's companion and skilled mechanic Braik, the stolen speeder was prepared to participate in the race and also take out a couple of it's contestants. Among the many modifications are the hidden blaster cannons, placed on the underside of the speeder. The blasters are more than capable of removing other racers from the track, and that's precisely what Marcus plans to do...
